Sylvia K. Fields, Ed.D., R.N.

Dr. Fields, who served as program consultant to the original Skidaway Health and Living Services organization, has an extensive diverse background in the health care industry. She has recently returned from retirement once again to a senior faculty position in Nursing at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah. Formerly she was Executive Director of the Savannah Health Mission, a free health care clinic for the uninsured. Dr Fields holds a BSN degree in Nursing from Adelphi University in Garden City New York and two master's degrees along with a doctorate of education from Teachers College of Columbia University. She spent much of her career teaching, researching and publishing numerous books and papers, most in collaboration with physicians and/or nurses, on a wide variety of health care topics. Her special area of interest is inter-professional education and practice: the Health Care Team. She has been a tenured Professor of Nursing at Emory University in Atlanta and two campuses of State University of New York. Earlier she taught nursing at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Since moving to The Landings, a residential development on Skidaway Island in 1995, Dr. Fields has maintained her affiliation with Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia where she retired as Director of the Generalist Physician Initiative and Coordinator of Community Health programs. She continues as a medical education research consultant in program development and evaluation. Dr. Fields holds many awards and honors, including listing in Who's Who in American Women and Who's Who in American Nursing. In 2003, she was inducted into the Nursing Hall of Fame at Teachers College Columbia University. Dr. Fields is also very involved in the Savannah community as an active member of the Skidaway Island Chapter of Rotary International. Formerly she served as a volunteer for Memorial Health's Shepherd Lectureship in Child Health, Education and Welfare and Backus Children's Hospital.
